Most people look and shop for post caps by the material they are made of, which makes since if you are looking for a special material such as copper, bronze, redwood, etc. However, there are so many to choose from that it is often better to shop by the size you are looking for. A good example was a recent client that wanted a brushed copper cap and I was able to find it very quickly online by shopping for 4 x 4 post cap + brushed copper.

When you have common sizes many websites have their products arranged and I have found out that using the size to find the right item works great. In fact, I start with the size most of the time and find that the 6 x 6 post cap is one of the most popular sizes that my clients need to finish off their fence or deck. So when they have no idea what kind of cap they need I sit them down and are able to show them nothing but the size they are looking for and they can go through the many different kinds of post caps that I know are available.
